The "Omnibus Bill" was proposed by Henry Clay and handled by Stephen Douglas. 1. Admitted California as a free state. 2. New Mexico and Utah to be decided by popular sovereignty. 3. Slave trade abolished in District of Columbia. 4. Tough Fugitive Slave Act passed. Led to sectional harmony for several years. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Show the evils of slavery. Used as big propaganda and was gasoline to the Civil War fire. -
Election of 1852
It was Millard Fillmore who followed Zachary Taylor. -
Ostend Manifesto
US looks to gain Cuba forcefully if not given the ability to purchase it. Seen as a move to expand slavery. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Act over issue of slavery in the territories west of Missouri and Iowa. Dealt with pop. sov. in Kansas and Nebraska. Lead to conflict of "Bleeding Kansas" -

James Buchanan takes the presidency in an unusually heated race. -
Panic of 1857
Failure of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co. in New York. Economic panic, as a result, spread to Europe, South America, and the Far East. -
Lecompton Constitution
Document stated that no restriction should be put on slavery in territorial Kansas. President Buchanan supported it, but it was turned down. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott sues for being taken into free state. Proslavery judge does not rule in his favor. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Debate over topics of slavery and pop. sov. Lincoln loses the election but gains more in the long run towards the presidency, -
Harper's Ferry Raid
Last attempt to get his way about slavery. Looked to start an antislavery revolution, but really just got himself hung. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln takes control of US. -
Secession
The South starts to secede from the Union in hopes of starting anew. They do not like the way the country is heading with Lincoln. North thought South was initially bluffing. -
Crittenden Compromise
Tried to end the secession crisis in US. Not passed because it gave too many advantages to the expansion of slavery. Not liked by Lincoln.
