British Colonizes Kenya
Kenya was originally called the British East African Protectorate in 1895. The British changed the name to Kenya in 1920. The name was administered by a British governor. -
The Mau Mau Rebellion
A Kikuyu guerrilla group was formed called the Mau Mau. They violently went against white settlers. When they did a state of emergency was declared. Jomo Kenyatta, the leader of the Kenya African Union, was put in jail and the KAU was banned. Once the state of emergency ended in 1960, Britain wanted Kenya under majority African rule and the Kenya African national Union was formed. -
Gaining Independence
Once Kenyatta was released from 2 years of house arrest, he was made the president of K.A.N.U. Kenya then gained independence in 1963 with him as prime minister. A year later the Republic of Kenya was formed, with Kenyatta as president. -
Moi Era
Kenyatta died in 1978 in office and Daniel Moi, his VP, was moved into his position. Under Moi, Kenya became a one-party stage and opposition was suppressed. In 1991, 6 opposing leaders tried to bring back democracy and then they were arrested and the party was banned. -
Attacks On Kenya
In 1998, Al-Queda bombed the US embassy in Nairobi. The attack killed 224 people and injured thousands. About four years later, tribes across Kenya gained $7m from Britain. The reason is because the explosives left by the British army were injury people for the last 50 years. Al-Queda bombed a hotel close to Mombasa, killing 10 Kenyans. -
Changes In Kenya
Kibaki beats Daniel in a decisive victory, which ended Moi’s 24 years in power. A Kenyan ecologist named Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace prize. In 2005, voters protested Kibaki by rejecting a new constitution. In 2007, disputes over the presidential elections caused violence that killed 1,500+.
