The Berlin Blockade
The Berlin Blockade was the first major international crisis of the Cold War. After WWII in Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the railroads that were used by the Allies. Without this route to bring in supplies, the United States used aircraft to fly in food and supplies. -
Formation of NATO
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an intergovernmental military alliance. It also works to bring together multiple countries armies to fight a large aggressor. -
Berlin Airlift
The Berlin Airlift used aircraft to fly in supplies to the people occupying western Germany. They were without food, fuel, and clothing through a long winter. -
Chinese Civil War (between Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong)
Mao Zedong was a communist leader, while Jiang Jieshi was against the communist views in China. The communist party suffered a large loss a year after fighting broke out and soon was defeated by Jieshi. -
National Security Council Report NSC-68
This was a 58 page report that was top secret. This policy paper was presented to the United States National Security Council. -
Korean War
The Korean war started when North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Stares was the main force that aided South Korea, while China come to the aid of the North. -
President Truman fires General MacArthur
MacArthur made public statements which contradicted the administration's policies. He was then fired, but still retained a lot of his power. -
Formation of the Warsaw Pact
Formally the Treaty of Friendship, this was a defense treaty among the Soviet Union and seven other Soviet-run countries. This was a formal military alliance. -
Launching of Sputnik
Sputnik was launched by the Soviet Union and was about the size of a beach ball. It put the Soviet Union ahead in the space race. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
A 13 day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. This was concerning the ballistic missile mounted on the island.
