    The Atomic Bomb
    The atomic bomb: type of bomb that could destroy large cities in a single blast and would change warfare forever. Albert Einstein realized he could make the bomb but was scared of Hitler finding out so him along with scientists decided to bring US. President Franklin Roosevelt. As a result The Manhattan Project was the introducted. The funding was two billion and two hundred thousand were working on it. This was the nuclear age. radium and uranium deposits at Port Radium in Canada’s Northwest.
  • Gouzenko Affair

    Gouzenko Affair
    Igor Sergeievich Gouzenko, fled the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. He took off with him a number of documents, drafted in Russian and proving the existence of a Soviet spy ring in Canada. The documents were sent in for questioning proving the existence that he was a Soviet spy. Little did he realize that his action was going to set off a major post-war crisis. This triggered an immediate Canadian and British reaction. For Canadians it symbolize the commencement of the Cold War.

    Formed afer WW1. Had a goal ol collective security. There was 51 members including Canada. Given three powers such as condemnation, sanctions, and military. When the charter was rafted by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.

    Formation of NATO
    North Atlantic Treaty Organization was a military alliance of Western nations set up in opposition to the Soviets in 1949. Canada and many more countries involved. Canada needed to meet Military commitments to NATO. Canadian soldiers in Europe of war readiness. Members agreed that nuclear weapeons could be used if needed in war against Soviets. This was last resort.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. FIrst commitment task to maintain peace for the UN. North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end

    Formed in 1955 as a response to NATO. Aimed at protecting the Soviet countries if attacked by NATO.
  • Suez Crisis

    Suez Crisis
    The Suez Crisis was a canal connecting the waterway east-west. Egypt's president Nasser took it. Isreal, Britian, and France fought back. Soviet Union stepped in. Lester Pearson Cnada's secretary ordered foreign troops to be out of Egypt to be replaced by UNEF (peacekeepers). 1000 Canadian volunteers. Occured until peace was settled. Canada was also involved in secret missions, weapon testing, arms production, and the supervison, ceasefires. Canadians still remained left with all their rights.

    NORAD- North American Air Defence
    it integrates the air-defence forces of the US and Canada under a joint command at Colorado Springs, Colorado to protect from a Soviet attack. Charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. Aerospace warning includes the detection, validation, and warning of attack against North America whether by aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, through mutual support arrangements with other commands.
  • Cancellation of the Avro Arrow

    Cancellation of the Avro Arrow
    Avro Arrow was an advanced, supersonic, twin-engined, all-weather interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe of Canada from 1949 until the government's controversial cancellation of the project. The aircraft to counter the threat of Soviet bombers over the Canadian North, RCAF officers, defence scientists and defence-industry officials had persuaded the Liberal government b to authorize two prototype airframes in anticipation of a production. Canada forced to develop Arrow's engine, etc.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The Communist government of the German Democratic Republic began to build a wire and concreate between East and West of Berlin. The official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to keep Western “fascists” from entering East Germany and undermining the socialist state. stood until November 9, 1989, when the head of the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased.
    People then left. Powerful and enduring symbol of the Cold War.

    SALT TREATY
    Nixon and Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev signed the ABM Treaty and interim SALT agreement in Moscow. For the first time during the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union had agreed to limit the number of nuclear missiles in their arsenals.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative

    The Strategic Defiense Initiative was a program initiated under President Ronald Reagan. The intent of the program was to develop an anti-ballistic missle system in order to prevent missle attacks from other countries, especially the Souviet Union.
