Cold War
The Cold War began shortly after World War II ended and lasted until around 1992 when the Berlin Wall collapsed and Germany became East and West. The Cold War was a political and military tension between powers. The United States led the West and the Soviets led the East. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was an international-relations policy stating the the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid. The U.S. president Harry Truman said this in a speech on May 12, 1947. The U.S. ended up spended $400 million in American money. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was in operation for four years and had started in the beginning of April in 1948. This was the American program to aid Europe and rebuild the economy after World War II. -
NATO
NATO was formed in 1949 under the U.S. leadership. NATO grouped most of the European powers along with Canada in a defense alliance against possible Soviet aggression.The combined military spendings of all NATO members is over 70% of the world's defense spendings. (January 1 is not correct) -
Korean War
The Korean War lasted from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. This was between the Republic and Democratic parts of Korea which today are now South and North. Because of this war the country split into two. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was fought between north and south Vietnam along with other countries helping them including the United States. This war took place in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. -
Space Race
The space race was between the Soviet Union and United States on who could get to the moon first. What started this race was October of 1957 when the Soviets launched their first satellite, Sputnik. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba. The United States used a paramilitary group, Brigade 2506, to invade Cuba but it turned out they were defeated by the Cuban Armed Forces. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 14 day crisis dealing with Cuba and Soviet Union on one side against the United states. This had created a nuclear hotline between the Soviet Union and the United States.
