Potsdom Conference
This was the last WWII meetings held by the 3 main world leaders, (Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin). They established a council for administration of Germany. Also the made an agreement to declar "unconitional surrender" from Japan. -
Iron Curtain decends on Europe
It was a symbolic and physical boundary dividing Europe. With the Soviet Union controlled states on the East side, and the democratic European states on the West side. Winston Churchill used the Phase in his speech "Sinews of Peace" -
Truman doctrin
A speech made by president Truman. it said that the U.S. would help Turkey and Greece economicly and also military aid. This would prevent thoes countries from falling to the Soviets. -
Marshall Plan
Sent over $13 billion to finance the economic recovery of Europe after the war. Marshall gave a speech at Harvard on June 5, 1947. It's goal was to restore confidence of European people for the economic growth of their countries. It was successful. -
Creation of Israel
The Jewish Agency Chairman David Ben-Gurion announced the state of Isreal. Making it the first Jewish state. At the same time fighting broke out between the Jews and the Arabs. Eygpt launched an air assuly against Israel that evening. -
Berlin Air Lift
The Soviets wanted Berlin to them selves. With out The Allies (British, French, and U.S.) interferance. So they closed all highways, canals, and railroads from western occupied Germany.
The soviets thought by doing this, it would make it impossible for the people who lived there to get supplies and food, and in the end the Allies would just leave. But the Allies didn't leave they supplied their sections from the air. -
Formation of NATO
The Unites States and 11 westerned nations formed the North Atlantic Tready Organization or NATO. They formed it, becuase of the fear of the spreading of communism. The Soviets and Eastern Europe then founded the Warsaw Pact. -
Korean war
The communist North Korea invaded South Korea. They were no match to the North. The United nations ordered North Korea to take thier troops out. It lasted three years, and the only outcome was that more people died. Today it's still not over, they still have soliders on both sides of their border. -

Israeli armed forces invaded Egypt toword the Suez Canal. They did it, becuase the Egyption president nationalized the canal that same year. The British and French also got involved. they eventualy withdrew their troops -
Vietnam War
one of the most deadly wars against civilians. American soldiers killed almost all of the people in South Vietnam. The officers in charge got charged for doing that. They tried to cover up the massacre, but it got leaked out by a soldier. -

Iraq overthrows the Britsh control in the country. They begain to recieve support from the USSR. This bond strengthened throughout the cold war. -

The U.S. Congress passed legislation to inaugurate NASA. It was statement that said we will win the space race against the Soviets. The main reason was becaue the Soviets launched the first satellite into orbit. So the U.S. needed to compete with them, thats why NASA was formed. -

A conflict between the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China. The PRC prottected the island of Quemoy. The U.S. helped the PRC by threatening the ROC with nuclear weapons. They installed militrary bases in China -
Bay of Pigs invasion
It started when a group of Cuban Refugees went to Cuba to weaken the Communist government controlled by Fidel Castro.
thier plan was to serve as a rallying point for the Cuban people. Who in the end would overthrow Castro's government. It miserably failed when Castro's army faught back. -
Berlin Wall Constructed
Two days after cutting off the passage of West and East Berlin with barbed wire fencing, East German officials begain to build the Berlin wall. It stood for 28 years being the most real symbol of the Cold War. Often refered to as the "Iron Curtain", because it divided Europe. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Soviet Union and U.S. leaders engaged in a military standoff that lasted for 13 days. It was caused by the Soviets installing of nuclear missiles on Cuba. The U.S. warned thats we would use military force they didn't disable the missiles. They agreed to remove the missiles. -
Limited Test Ban Treaty
President Kennedy signed this treaty to make it illigal to test nuclear weapons anywhere except for underground. thier goal for makig the treaty was to slow the arms race and to stop the bad effects of Nuclear fallout. -

He was killed in Dallas, Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald. There was some conspericy theories that communist countries were involved in the attack. His Vice President Johnson became the president. -

President Johnson accused North Vietnam of firing on two american destroyers. It turned out the U.S. was in thier teritory. This led to the U.S. involvement in the Viertnam War. -
USS Pueblo Incident
The USS is a techical research ship. It was captured by North Koreans while doing a routine surveillance of the North Korean coast. the Koreans fired wounding crew members, and then boarded the ship. The 83 member crew was taken to Pyongyang where they were imprisoned for spying. 11 months later the US made an agreement with the Korean Gov. to free the crew members. -

the largest army controlled treaty in the world. iIt includes 188 states. It was opened for signature in 1968, but accually was used until 1970. -

SALT stands for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. The Soviet president was president Nixon met in Moscow to sign it. these were their attempts to control nulear weapons. -
Paris Peace Accords
The U.S., Viet Cong, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam signed an agreement to end the war in Vietnam. Also to restore peace in the country. This agreement included a cease-fire in the counrty. -
Iran Hostage Crisis
A group of Iranian students invaded the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. they took more that 60 Americans as hostages. The students thought this would end American interference in in their cuntries affairs. They released the hostages free 444 days after it began. -
USSR invades Afghanistan
The USSR sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan. They immediataly took complete control. This was the only country the Soviets invaded. They wanted to stop the civil war going on in the county. -
U.S. and Soviet Boycott Moscow Olimpics
President Jimmy Carter announced that the U.S. will boycott the Olimpic games in Moscow. We boycotted it, becuase the USSR didn't meet Carter's deadline to withdraw its troops from Afganastan. Carter also issued a trading embargo on grain and infomation technology on the Soviets. -

A Korean airline was shot down by Soviet jet fighter planes. This attack killed 269 people on the plane. It increased the tension between the U.S. and the Soviets. -

Tiananmen square is the center of Bejing. Chinese troops stormed teh square arresting and killing thousands of prodemocrocy protesters. At least 400 were killed and 9,000 were arrested! -
Dissolving of the Soviet Union
3 days before the representatives from the eleven soviet republics met in Kazakh city. They declared that they won't be a part of the USSR anymore. Instead they would establish a Commonwealth of Independent States. Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet leader was disapointed with his nation so he resigned peacfully.
