Stalin had a stroke on March 1st, and then died 4 days later on May 5th. He was 74 years old. -

This man is selected to be the next Secretary of the Communist Party. He gets the title in September of the same year and becomes premier in 1958. -
The Warsaw Pact
The Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria sign a pact that states if any of them get attacked by people not of this treaty, the rest of them were to fight back to help the victimized country. -

Cuban nationalist Fidel Castro invades and takes over Cuba. On April 17th, 1961, there were roughly 1,400 American-trained Cubans that went and tried to take the country back. They surrendered within 24 hours. -

Watergate Scandal/Nixon's Resignation
On June 17, 1972, several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), located in the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. The prowlers were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, however. They had been caught attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. Nixon's knowledge and involvement led to his impeachment and resignation on August 8th. Nixon is still the only US president to resign his role as president. -
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
30,000 Soviet troops invade a weakened Afghanistan and overthrow their government. Eventually the USSR would try to take over the whole nation with more soldiers, and millions of Afghans flee or seek asylum. -

Mikhail Gorbachev is the only man to outlive their competition and is selected to be the Soviet Union's new leader. -

The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty) is the abbreviated name of the treaty between the US and Soviet Union on the elimination of their intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. This was signed by US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. -

Because of ethnic conflict, a lack of support for communism, and economic troubles, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned his post as president of the Soviet Union, also disbanding the Communist country. This left Boris Yeltsin as president of the newly independent state of Russia.
