This conference formally divided Germany and Austria into four zones. The Russian Polish border was also determined and Korea was divided into Soviet and American zones. -

The U.S. dropped the second bomb on Nagasaki. -
V J Day
On this day, the Japanese surrendered, which brought World War II to an end. -

Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam to be an independent republic. -
Iron Curtain Speech
On this day, Winston Churchill delivered a speech known as the 'Sinews Peace' that has the famous phrase "an iron cutain has descended on Europe". -
Truman Doctrine
President Truman made a promise to help any country that was facing a Communist takeover. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program that was offered by The United States to any European country. It was rejected by Stalin and ant Eastern Bloc country that was considering accepting would be punished. So, the aid was only given to Western European Countries. -
Cominform
The USSR set up Cominform which was the Information Bureau of Communist and Worker's Parties responsible for the creation of the Eastern Bloc. -
Berlin Blockade
Russia's response to the merge of French, USA and UK partitions of Berlin was ro cut all road and rail links to that sector. By doing this, it eant that everyone living in Western Berlin had no access to food and faced starvation. Food was brought by UK and US airplanes. -

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formed with member states Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States -
