BERLIN AIRLIFT ENDS BLOCKADE OF WEST BERLIN
On May 12, 1949, the Soviets lifted the blockade and by Sept. 30, 1949, the airlift ended.
The airlift began after World War II when Germany was occupied territory and Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet zone. -

The Soviet Union exploded their first bomb which was a huge surprise to the US because they were not expecting the Soviet Union to possess nuclear weapon knowledge so quickly. This caused the US to question their own safety in the war. Truman responded by calling to United States to build up its nuclear weapons to halt the spread of Soviet influence.

NIXON SIGNS AGREEMENT TO WITHDRAW FROM VIETNAM
Vietnam peace accords signed which withdrawals the US from Vietnam.
The accord provided for the end of hostilities, the withdrawal of U.S. and allied troops the return of prisoners of war, and the formation of a four-nation international control commission to ensure peace.
