When 1953 came, some 50,000 workers confronted the Soviet army in the streets of the German Capital. In 1961, the city split into democratic West Berlin and communist East Berlin. There was low-paid East Germans unhappy with the Communists who fled to West Berlin. In Berlin, the wall was completed with massive concrete barriers, topped with barb wire and patrolled by guards. -

Berlin Wall 2

Early 1968, Czechoslovakia leader Alexander Dubcek introduced greater freedom of expression and limited democracy. In the end the Warsaw-Pact troops launched a huge invasion of Czechoslovakia in August of that year to put an end to all the freedoms. -
