Start of Civil War
On April 12th 1861, after months of failed negotiations, the Confederacy bombards the Union fort sparking the American Civil War. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
Taking place in Virginia, the Rebel General Lee defeats defeats General Pope, while being outnumbered by 12,000men. The Union forces suffer 10,000 men killed or wounded. Lee would continue on his Maryland Campaign. -
Battle of Gettysburg
In an attempt to bring the war to the north, General Lee pushed up into Pennyslvania and was met bt by Maj. Gen. Meade. The Union had 93,921 men while the Confederacy had 71,699. After three days of battle, including Pickets charge, the Confederacy was forced to retreat. The COnfederacy never invaded the Union again. 3,155 Union soldiers and 4,708 Rebels were killed. -
First Skirmish of Gainesville
On 14 February 1864, the first battle occurred when about 50 Union troops entered the city intending to capture two trains. the Confederacy, with 130 men attempted to repulse this raid but were defeated by the Union force, which successfully returned to Jacksonville after holding the town for 52 hours. Battle of Gainesville
The Battle of Gainesville took place on August 17, 1864. The fighting was viewed by many of the townspeople "from the windows of the Beville house near downtown." 342 Union troops occupying the city were attacked from the rear by some 200 soldiers of the Second Florida Cavalry. The fighting lasted just two hours. in those hours 28 Union soldiers were killed,188 captured. Only 3 Confederates died. THe union forces retreated to St.Augustine and Jacksonville, staying there for the rest of the war. -
Sherman's March Begins
General Sherman Began his march to Savannah. The march ended on December 20th with the capture of Savannah. His plan was to make the South feel the pain of war with his scortched earth policy. After capturing Savannah, his forces move towards Richmond. -
Confederacy Surrenders
General Lee surrenders at the McLean House in Appomattox Court House. Upon hearing the news of Lee's surrender Confederate forces surrender. President Jefferson Davis is captured on May 10th, 5 days after the dissolution of the Confederate government.
