South Carolina Secedes
The secession of South Carolina started realistic ideas of two seperate nations. When South Carolina seceded, there was a domino effect with lots of the other Southern states. President Buchanan didn't really do anything to prevent the secession, while Lincoln had no power to stop them. -

Fort Sumter
The Confederacy's forces seized federal property. The South fired the first shots and this is known as the official start of the Civil War. It was a Southern victory to the North's surprise. -
First Bull Run
This battle made both sides realize that this wasn't going to be a quick war. Stonewall Jackson was crucial to this Confederate victory. 7,000 were killed. -
Battle of Antietam
This was the bloodiest day of the war. A Northern and Southern general met near a creek. The North had 70000 soldiers while the South had 40000, yet McClellan still was anxious and worried he would lose. 22000 died and the north won after the South retreated. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This proclamation by Lincoln is issued after the Battle of Antietam. In it, Lincoln states that if the North wins the war, the slaves in the 11 rebelling states would be freed. It revitalized the Union's spirit and inspired free Blacks to join the fight. -

Battle of Vicksburg
General Grant attacks Vicksburg continuously for 48 days. Confer ages dug themselves underground. On July 4th, 1863 Vicksburg surrendered. The Confederacy was cut in two. This was a major war turning point in the Union's favor. -

The first time Lee goes North, he meets Meade on accident at Gettysburg. A battle breaks out. Lee loses and leaves the North for good. Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address. -

March to the Sea
The Union took the approach of the crueler the war, the sooner it's over. Sherman and Grant used total war, marching from Atlanta to Savannah, destroying everything in their path with 62,000 men. -
Appomattox
The final battle of the Civil War. Lee surrenders to Grant. The peace terms were not harsh, but the south is ruined in many other aspects. -
Lincoln's Assassination
John Wilkes Booth assassinates President Lincoln before slaves are freed.
