  • Fort Sumter

    Started the civil war. Confederate soldiers attacked the Unions Fort Sumter in the harbor at Charleston, SC.
  • First battle of Bull Run

    Union and Confederate armies battle in the first major land battle of the civil war. Confederate victory tells the north that defeating the south won't be as easy as once thought.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The bloodiest battle of the civil war. Over 23,000 soldiers dead. Caused the emancipation proclamation.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Abraham Lincoln signed this proclamation freeing all slaves in the "rebel states" if they could get to the North or join the war on the Norths side.
  • Formation of the 54th mass

    The first African American regiment organized in the northern states during the civil war. They weren't allowed to actually fight most of the time because of racism and did all of the "dirty work" like cleaning up the dead bodies.
  • Vicksburg

    The heavily fortified city of Vicksburg is the gateway to the Mississippi River. To force surrender, Grant holds the rebel forces under siege for six weeks. Once captured, the union takes hold of the Mississippi river dividing the Confederacy in half.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Lee marched his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania in June 1863. On July 1, the advancing Confederates clashed with the Union’s Army of the Potomac. The next day saw even heavier fighting, as the Confederates attacked the Union on both left and right. Lee was forced to withdraw his battered army toward Virginia on July 4. Turning point of the civil war.
  • New York city draft riots

    People in NY rioted when they started drafting people. They didn't want to be forced into war.
  • Gettysburg address

    The Gettysburg Address is a speech by Abraham Lincoln, and one of the best-known speeches in American history. It was delivered by Lincoln during the Civil War at the dedication of the lives lost in the war in Gettysburg.
