Beauregard led confederate forces to a surprise attack. This two day battle began on April 6th and ended April 7th. After Shiloh, Union troops laid siege to Corinth,forcing the Confederates to withdraw. The north seemed well on its way to controlling the Mississippi River.

As the war went on Lincoln changed his beliefs for the role of slavery in the war. Even though many Northerners were against slavery, not many of them were eager enough to risk their lives to end it. The abolitionists described slavery as a moral wrong that needed to be abolished.

Sherman was thought of as a hero to the Union because he was able to capture the vital port city of Savannah and deplete many Confederate supply stores without relying on supply lines of his own. The US officers accounted 13,000 heads of cattle, 9,500,000 pounds of corn and 10,500,000 pounds of fodder seized by troops.
