South Carolina seceded from the U.S. when Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. Because he hated slavery, South Carolina saw this as a threat and continued to have slavery in the state.

Lincoln attempted to send supplies to Fort Sumter. He warned the state in advance, but South Carolina wanted the fort to surrender. The Civil War began when shots were fired at Fort Sumter in an attempt to stop Lincoln's supplies from reaching the fort. Robert Anderson finally surrendered the fort over to the Confederates after two days of attacking.

The Battle of Antietam was considered the bloodiest day in America's history. During this battle, over 26,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing on both sides. The battle was considered a draw, but it stopped Lee from going into Maryland and he went back to Virginia.

Lincoln addresses his Emancipation Proclamation which frees slaves in all the Union land and allows black soldiers into the army. From this point forward, the Civil War was a war fought over slavery.

This is when the first draft in American history took place. Congress ordered a draft and all men had to go to war unless they paid the government $300 or came up with a substitute. Thi started drafting riots in major Northern cities like New York.

The war was ended when General Stand Waitie of the confederate side surrendered at Fort Gibson. He was last general to surrender.
