Attack on Fort Sumter
General P.G.T. Beauregard, of the Confederate army opened fire on Union soldiers taking shelter in Fort Sumter. At 2:30pm Union commander Robert Anderson, surrendered the Fort and was evacuated the next day. -

Maryland Put Under Martial Law
The capital of the the Union was in Maryland, a border state, so Lincon put Maryland under martial law. Now the state could not cede. (Summary 11.3) -
First Battle of Bull Run
Northerners wanted to end the war quickly. Union General Irvin McDowell marched into Virginia unpreprared. The South held firm and the untrained troops panicked and retreated. -
McClellan Waits
In March of 1862, General George McClellan sets out with his 100,000 troops after seven months of training to a point Southeast of Richmond. Almost there, McClellan stops to ask Lincon for more troops. (Summary 11.2) -
Union Retreats
The delay from the Union solidiers gave Confederates plenty of time to strengthen their small army. They stopped McClellans forces outside or Richmond in May. By late June they had forced the Union to retreat. (Summary 11.2 The War in the East) -
The Emancipation Proclamation
On January 1, 1863 Lincon issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincon was ready to do so in the summer of 1862. but nervous Cabnet members urged him to wait until the Union had another win. Border states and the West were not affected. Really, very few slaves were freed. (Summary 11.3 Emancipating the Enslaved) -
Battle of Vicksburg
Admiral David Dixon Porter sent a fleet down the Mississippi running the gaintlet of guns firing from Vicksburg, and rendevouosed with Grant's Army of the Tennesse -
Battle of Gettusburg
Confederate General Robert E. Lee concentrated his army around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, while Gen. George Meade's forces approached. Confederates drove the Union up Cemetary Hill. The next day Lee struck the Union line the result, severe fighting at Devils Den, Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, Culps Hill, and East Cemetery Hill. On the afternoon of July 3rd Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetary Ridge and lost this was known as Pickett's Ridge. -
Gettysburg Address
The 273 word speech was remembered as one of the most important speeches in history. The Gettysburg Address. Lincon invokoed the princibles of human equality that was stated on the Decleration. -
Lee Surrendered to Grant
After the fall of Richmond and Petersburg General Lee had been attempting to escape the west so that he could link up with another Confederate army under Joseph E. Johnston. It took Lee 8 days before he decided to surrended. Grant took all of Lee's supplies and was closing in on him in the proccess.
