The City of Ember

Assignment day

On assignent day, Lina and Doon get assigned jobs, Lina's being pipeworks labourer, and Doon's being a messenger. When Doon gets his job he gets mad, cruples the piece of paper that was given to him, Doon wanting to be able to help the city asks Lina if she is willing to switch jobs with him. Lina wanting to be free and dreaming of always being a messenger agreed to switch their jobs

Poppy

One day Lina comes home from a day running around as a messenger, she sees Granny going through a closet throwing things everywhere. Granny says she remembers her grandfather, the seventh-Mayor taliking her about the box containing the instructions. Lina asks where Poppy is, Granny says she doesn't know so Lina looks for her and finds her chewing on paper but in that moment she did not know that those were the instructions

Doon makes discoveries in the pipeworks

While exploring the pipeworks, and not following orders, Doon finds a trap door in the ceiling, a locked door and strange markings in the rocks, by the river, where it leaves the pipeworks. He then decides to invent a "portable light" so he goes to the library in the hope to learn how.

Lina Tells Doon about the instructions

Lina realises that the note must be from the Builders, therefore important. Even though the mesage is mysterious, Lina determines it must be instructions. She decides to show the message to her boss and to Lizzie who dismiss it so Lina sends a letter to the Mayor, which he ignores. In the end she realises that the right person for this is kind, curious and observant Doon. She finds him at the library and invites him to her house to show him.

Granny's passing

One night Lina woke up from a nightmare dreaming about something lurking in the darkness, she also dreamed about tunnel "351"... she went back to bed and the next morning went to wake up Granny and Granny said she did not feel good. Lina called a doctor and they told her that she had a fever. Lina took care of her but asked Mrs. Murdo to help. At night Granny called Lina. She stayed with her untill it was morning and when it was day, she saw that Granny had passed in her sleep.

The Big And Longest Blackout

One day, on her day off Lina went shopping with Poppy. As she got distracted in a shop Poppy sneaked out. While Lina frantically bolted around the streets looking for Poppy the city went dark. She had to stop searching and wait anxiously for the longest time in the history of the city. Fortunately when the lights came back on Doon appeared holding Poppy.

They Decode The Instructions

Thanks to Clary’s suggestions Lina and Doon began to decipher the cryptic instructions and connect the dots of their findings: the weird shapes on the rock by the river must stand for “exit”.

They Escape

As they are wanted by the Mayor’s guards for “spreading rumours” about him, Lina and Doon continue their exploration of the pipeworks and finally understand what they have to do. They make a plan to escape on their own, because they can’t warn the city, on the night of the singing.

They Find the “Other City”

By the river’s edge they find everything they need to escape: candles, matches and a boat. Even though they have no idea how to use these things Lina, Doon and Poppy, set off. The journey on the river was long, scary and dark but they finally arrive at the end of the tunnel, they see a sign, follow it and arrive in a beautiful but strange place. Even though it’s dark out everything is different: they smells, the air, the ground and a big “light circle” in the sky. It must be the new city!

They Send A Message To Ember

After a good night of sleep Lina and Doon realise they forgot to inform the city. They begin exploring the surrounding, amazed by all they see. In their exploration they find a cave and as they look down over a very steep ledge they see a light and realise it is Ember. They decide to write a message and drop it in the hole. As it happens, but unknown by Lina and Doon, the note lands right in front of Mrs. Murdo.
