    first missionaries

    The first missionaries of North America were 12 spanish franciscans. The missionaries came with Columbus on his second journey to the 'new world.' These 12 francisans introduced thousands of Natives to Christ and his teachings.

    in 1565 the first firmly established settlement in the US was built(Saint Augustine in Floridia). and the second establishment was in 1609.

    Saint Isaac Jogues was the first person to be martyed in North America. He was one of the six Jesuits and two missionaries who were martyred in the years 1642 and 1649. For 14 mounths they were held captive and tortured by Mohawks. And when Issac Jogues returned to Canada he was martyred.

    John Carrol was the first american bishop. John Carrol became bishop in 1789 and became bishop of the diocese of Baltamore. John Carrol help find Georgetown collage in 1789.

    In Baltimore 1791, St.Marys became the first US seminary. St.Marys fous established by the first american bishop, John Carrol. At one time St.Marys was the entire United States, but now there are more than 200 diocses in the country.

    Saint Francis Cabrini was one of the nine million people catholics who came to america in the years 1820 and 1920. The immigrants wanted to worship their own culture and traditions. Then Francis ministered to Italian imigrants. Franis also started a community called the Missionary Sisters of the Sacrad Heart to care for orphans. Frances and her sisters sailed west, to America in 1889. In 35 years of being in america she founded 70 institutions for the poor, abondoned, and sick.

    Elizabeth Ann Seton was cannonized first native born saint in 1975. Elizabeth was a widow with 5 kids. She established the first catholic school in america for girls with the encouragement of John Carrol in 1808. And a year after that she founded the sisters of charity.
  • First american bishop to be named saint.

    in 1977, John Neumann became the first american bishop to become saint. back then people didnt see priest as often as we do today. The priest would go door by door encouraging people to pray and live like Jesus taught. JOhn Neumann was a priest in Bohemia and knew a dozen of languages. John Neumann soon later became bishop of Philadelphia. He built 50 churches, built a cathedrial, opened almost 100 schools and devoted his care to over 100 parishes.
