The first dream
David dreams of a big city and bird like figures (planes) which is strange because waknuk is a small town in Labrador, Ca which is very pioneer like with no technoligie. David would not know about a big city, boats, planes, traffic or the sea... -
Meeting Sophie
David first meets Sophie at the river after her foot getting stuck in between the rocks. David discovers her extra toe which in waknuk is considered a "mutation" Sophie begs him to promise that he'll never tell David promises and they adventure to Sophie's house. -
Davids hand
David tells us that the incident began when he got a bad splinter and tried to bandage his hand by himself. When his mother scolded him for doing a poor job, he told her that he “could have managed all right by myself if I’d had another hand.” David family became very angry but David explains that he didn't actually want a third hand just expressed his frustration in the wrong way. -
Family religion
Elias' son Joseph who is David's father is an important man in their town and is a very religious individual as is his wife, Emily. The Strorm’s family life is filled with religious practices. The religion is focused on keeping the “pure” form of humans. -
Telling Uncle Axle
David tells Uncle Axle Sophies secret. David truly trusts uncle axle and looks up to him as a role model. David not having anyone to really talk to in his inner family really opens up to Uncle Axle. Uncle Axle promises to David that he will never tell and suggests that he is the only one David tells this secret to -
Sophies family caught!!
David tells his telepathic community of friends, via thoughts, about the incident with Sophie. In a conversation with the Inspector, David finds out Sophie and her parents were caught. -
Emily gives birth to Petra
Emily gives birth to a baby, who is named Petra. Petra knowing that she had a deviation was still certified as normal by the inspector. -
Aunt Harriet found dead in the river
Aunt Harriet has also given birth recently but to a Deviant child. In a desperate need to get her child certified as normal as well, she goes to Emily and hopes that Emily will swap babies with Harriet to get Harriet's certified as normal. However Emily rejects her proposal, and brings in her husband Joseph who then accuses Aunt Harriet of concealment and attempt to commit a crime. Aunt Harriet is later found dead in a river. -
The telepathic kids come together
The telepathic group, which includes a few other characters apart from David and Rosalind, share their names and locations with each other so that they can be more aware of each other in case of any emergencies. -
Petra falls in the river
David discovers that Petra can communicate telepathically when Petra falls in the river and sends out a panic message, David comes to her rescue, and finds that Rosalind also was drawn toward Petra’s signal, thus endangering them, as people could wonder how they both knew of the danger when no one else heard anything. -
Old Jacobs opinion
David talks to Old Jacob about the many impurities in the crops and stock this season, and finds out that Old Jacob thinks all impurities, including humans should be killed, instead of sterilized and sent to the Fringes. -
Anne's decision
Anne announces her plans to marry to Alan. The telepathic group tries to talk Anne out of getting married to a normal person because it puts them all in danger. Anne decides to cut off contact with the group. -
Uncle Axel tells David it was him who killed
Uncle Axel reveals that he killed Alan in fear that Alan would have revealed the telepathic group -
Petra and the Zealand women
David, Roslind and Petra still on there way to the Fringes. Petra still communicating with the Zealand women discovers the all the zealanders are telepathic -
Kidnapping
David, Rosalind and Petra all have been kidnapped by the Fringes people and are headed to meet the Fringes leader. -
Heading to the Fringes
David,Roslind and Petra head to the Fronges with Roslinds fathers great horses where Petra meets a Zealander -
Zealanders to the rescue
After being kidnapped according to Petra the Zealanders are are on there way to save them. but Michael is skeptical. -
David meets Gordon Strorm
After David discovers that Gorden is his uncle he meets him the Fringes. Gorden who is the leader of the Finges people tells David he is taking Rosalind to bear his child David is then kicked out of the Fringes encampment. Rosalind and Petra continue prisoned by the Fringes people. -
Sophie to the rescue
Sophie rescues Roslind and Petra from the Fringes peoples tent by killing the guard. -
Gordon shoots Joseph
Gordon shoots Joseph with an arrow and kills him. Later both Gordon and Sophie are also shot down and killed with arrows. As the Fringes people and the people of Waknuk continue to fight, the Zealand woman arrives. -
The ending
David, Petra, and Rosalind leave in the flying machine with the Zealand woman, and they go to the island of Zealand. The book ends as they approach a city that looks exactly like the one from David’s dream at the beginning of the book.
