    Holden gets in a fight with Stradlater because of multiple reasons: 1. Holden wrote a composition for Stradlater, but he didn't write about the right topic. Holden rips up the composition because Stradlater is complaining about it. 2. Stradlater had gone on a date with a girl named Jane, who Holden knew when he was younger. Holden punches Stradlater because of something he implies. Stradlater wins the fight, leaving Holden with a bloody face and the conviction to run away from the school early.

    After checking into the hotel, Holden makes a few calls and eventually decides to spend some time at The Lavender Room. He tries to order alcohol, but the waiter doesn't let him because he seemed too young. Holden dances with a few girls there who are obsessed with looking out for celebrities at the club.

    Holden meets a man on the elevator up to his room who convinces him to hire a prostitute. The girl comes up to his room, but Holden realizes that he doesn't actually want to do anything with her. He pays her and she leaves somewhat angrily. The next morning, she comes back with the man from before demanding that he pay five more dollars. They fight because Holden had been told before that the price was only five.

    Holden meets a girl named Sally for a date. They go to a play, one which Sally enjoys and Holden finds pretentious. She sees a guy that she knows there after the play and their conversation irritates Holden. They leave and then Holden and Sally go ice skating. After they skate they get into a fight after Holden asks her to run away with him, and Holden leaves.

    Holden meets a friend names Luce, who he knows from his old school. Luce comes off as being fed up with Holden's personality, and doesn't seem very interested with the conversation. He does tell Holden about his father, who is a psychoanalyst.

    Holden decides to visit his little sister Phoebe by sneaking into his family home in the middle of the night. When he gets to where his sister was sleeping, he reads her school journals before waking her up. He promises her that he will go to her school play, and they get into a fight when she finds out that he has been kicked out of another school. Their parents come home and he has to sneak out again, but not before crying for a while. She gives him some of her money before he left.

    After leaving his family's home, Holden decides to stay the night at the house of his old teacher, Mr. Antolini. The Antolini's are very hospitable, with Mrs. Antolini making coffee and Mr. Antolini giving Holden advice about life. Holden sleeps on their couch, but is woken by Mr. Antolini petting his hair in the dark. This scares Holden, who leaves quickly with the excuse of needing to get his bags from the train station. Holden does not go back, and spends the night on a bench there instead.

    Holden meets Phoebe at the museum
    Holden decides to go to Phoebe's school and give them a note to give to her. The note asks Phoebe to meet him at the museum, because he has decided to move out west and he wants to say goodbye. He waits for her at the museum, knowing that she will meet him when she gets out of school for lunch. When she meets him, she has a suitcase with her, saying that she will go with him. When he tells her she can't, she gets angry. To make her feel better, Holden promises to go back home and not leave.

    In order to make up with Phoebe, Holden offers to take Phoebe to the zoo and skip school. He also promises to go back home afterwards. At first she doesn't talk to him, but she gradually softens up and tells Holden that she isn't angry at him anymore. She rides on the carousel a few times, and Holden feels happy watching his sister ride the carousel.
