    Allie was Holden's brother sister that died of Leukemia. His death is a root cause of his anger.

    Holden get's expelled for bad grades and poor work.

  • James Castle's Suicide

    James Castle was a kid who went to Holden's school who committed suicide after severe bullying. Holden is reminded by this death that Allie is dead.

  • Holden' Breakdown

    Holden has a breakdown when he takes Sally on a date and asks her to run away with him. He freaks out on her, insulting her, when she says no.

  • Fight with Stradlater

    Holden gets into a fight with his roommate Stradlater after he believes that Stradlater is going to manipulate the girl he likes. Holden refuses to give up the fight, even though he is bound to lose.

  • Broken Record

    Holden buys his little sister a record and later breaks the record at the park by accident. This makes his depression worse, yet his sister still takes the shattered pieces of the record and "cherishes" them, making him feel better.

  • Holden Purchases a Prostitute

    Holden buys the time of a woman named Sunny, but his attitude changes when she enters the room. Holden looks just to have a conversation, but she gets annoyed, leaves, and comes back with her pimp, Maurice. Holden then gets punched by Maurice, feeling like he had been shot with an automatic weapon.

  • Holden's Discovery

    Holden finds the definition of being "a catcher in the rye" to mean a protector of a child's innocence. He finds the word "Fu*k" written in graffiti, and it disturbs him that a child could learn the meaning of that word.

  • Central Park Zoo

    Holden goes to meet Phoebe and tell her his plan of leaving and she gets very upset. Holden then takes Phoebe to the Central Park Zoo and decides to stay with her, and is filled with joy to see her on the carousel at the Zoo.

  • The Conclusion

    Holden concludes his story when he tells that he is in an institution in California, and plans to attend another school in September. He wishes to talk no longer since he misses his classmates, He warns the reader that telling people of personal experiences will make you miss those who you shared your experiences with.
