    Panama becoming a province of Colmbia.
    Panama was a provine of Columbia. The US then began negotiating a Panama treaty with Columbia. Many Colombians oppesed the deal because it would give the US permanent control over a 6-mile-wide stretch. Colombians were saying that the rights were worth more than what the US offered. So Columbia's governent held out more money. But Roosevelt was too impatient and didn't want to lose ANY time in bargaining.

    US Marines landed in Colon to prevent hostile Columbian troops from reaching Panama City. The US immediatly reconignized the independet Republican of Panama. US gunboats waited in the harbor to provide support for the Rebels. Roosevelt knew that many Panamanians disliked Columbian rule.

    Three days later, a Panamanian frenchman signed a treaty giving the US control of the Isthmus of Panama. The US said they would pay $10mil plus $250,000 a year in rent. Panamanians got control over the Panama Canal Zone. They signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty.

    The US started building the canal across Panama. They started to build it in 1904 and the canal was finished inn 1914. Roosevelt's role in the revolt shocked alot of Americans about the " gunboat diplomacy".

Contruction of the canal involved 3 major tasks. Workers worked very hard buy erecting the canals giant locks, cutting through a mountain, and dam a river. The most challeging job the wojrers had was digging the Gaillard Gut, which was a 9 mile ditch through the mountains.

    Panama was spread with many sicknesses. But Malaria and Yellow fever was the ones that took over. William C. Gorgas took up the problem of the diseases. Most people believed that the damp nights caused yellow fever. Ronald Ross found a certain kind of mosquito carried malaria. Gorgas and his workers cleared brush and drained all swamps where mosquitos live.

    The Panama Canal was FINALLY opened on August 15, 1914. The Panama Canal was on the back of newpapers. The greatest engineering project in the history of the world. When it was completed the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were limited.
