He set sail on The Mary. That was the frist slave ship that set sail on Rhode Island. This was the Brown's first recorded involvment in the slave trade. -
Nicholas and John Brown
Nicholas and John joined their uncle and several other Providence merchants on the family's second involvment wiht the slave trade. They set sail on the Wheel Of Fortune.The ship was later captured by a French privateer and took a lot of the family's investment with it. -
The Sally
Nicholas Brown sent two ships to meet in the Caribbean to sell horses and other goods. The third ship, The Sally, was first sent to West Africa to gather slaves and sell them to the British colonies in the Caribbean. -
The Sally Arrives
Captain Hopkins arrived in West Africa on the Sally in what is now the country of Guinea. He made relationships with many African leaders in order to make good trade for slaves. -
Captain Hopkins
Captain Hopkins bought his last slave. He had originally purchased 196 slaves. Of those, he sold nine to other traders, and another twenty died. And after the Sally left the coast, even more died. -
Slaves Rebel
Eight days after the Sally left the coast, the slaves rose and rebelled so Captain Hopkins and the rest of the crew started firing at the slaves. Eight slaves were shot and killed and many others were wounded. -
The Brown Brothers
88 slaves were lost on the Sally but the Brown brothers were glad that Captain Hopkins was still alive and in good health.
