The Brown's second involvement in the slave trade was when the two brothers Niucholas and John joined theie uncle Obadiah. The ship The Wheel of Fortune was captured by a French privateer, taking much of the family's profit. -
The Sally
The Brown's sent three ships to the Carribean. The third ship The Sally was to set sail to West Africa to acquire a load of slaves for sale in British colonies. They hoped this would support their struggling iron and candle making buisnesses. -
The Sally's Departure
This was the day that The Sally left Newport for Africa to gather and sell slaves to Carribean merchants. -
Captain Hopkins and the Sally
Captain Hopkins visted many African leaders in order to develop relationships. He also traded with European merchants and soldor bought slaves to and from other ships. -
Captain Hopkins Purchases
Capatin Hopkins bought his last slave and purchased 196 slaves in all. He slod 9 to other traders on the coast and 20 others died. -
The Sally's Death Toll
The death toll began to rise when uprising occured. The crew suppresed the uprising by firing guns at the slaves kiling 8 and injuring several others. -
The Sally was an Economic Disaster
The Sally ended up losing 88 of the 196 slaves purchased. This was economically disasterous for the Brown Brothers but they still remained cheerful.
