The British after the French and Indian War

  • Proclamation of 1763

This act caused the colonists to not be able to settle west of the Appalachians. This made the colonists very angry because it went against the beliefs of Manifest Destiny. The British did this to settle Native Americans into land so they could live peacefully without too many negative interactions with the colonists. The British government was very strict about this and reacted with force.
  • Sugar Act

The British thought that the colonists owed money to them after the war, so they taxed them with the Sugar Act. It was not that big of a tax, but the colonists reacted very angrily because there wasn't representation from the British enforcing it, they just simply had to pay it. The British were fine with this, so they put British guards and things in the colonies to make sure everything was moving smoothly.
  • Stamp Act

This was another tax imposed by the British a year later than the Sugar Act. This taxed a lot of things, pretty much anything made of paper such as documents or playing cards. This caused the colonists to be very angry and they started to protest openly for the first time. The British had a strong hold on the colonies however, and they didn't really have to react because the colonies didn't pose much of a threat.
  • Townshend Acts

This was yet another tax imposed on the colonies by the British. This taxed the import of goods into the country such as tea and glass. Of course this just added to the colonies anger and protests. The British just employed more troops in the colonies and enforced the tax greatly.
  • Intolerable Acts

The British decided to impose this act which closed the Boston Harbor. This was the retaliation of the British after the Boston Tea Party. This of course added more to the colonies anger. The British just reacted with more and more control over the colonies trying to do all they can to keep them in check and control them.
