The Sugar Act
The Sugar act was passed on April 5, 1764. It was passed so the British could pay off debt of the French and Indian War and so they could make money. The Sugar act stated that it would tax just about everything that had sugar in it. It effected the colonists in a major way because a ton of things had sugar in them. -
The Stamp Act
The Stamp act was passed on March 22, 1765. It was passed because the colonists were very unhappy about the Sugar Act so they decided to take a different approach. It stated that every piece f printed paper had to have a stamp. -
The Quartering Act
The Quartering Act was passed on May 17, 1765. It was passed because the British were in debt from the French and Indian war so they had to make sure that the colonists were going to pay their taxes, so they sent soldiers over to make sure. The act stated that the colonists had to provide food and housing to the soldiers if needed. -
The Townshend Act
The Townshend Act was passed to keep people from smuggling merchandise into the colonies. It basically said that if you were caught smuggling goods into the colonies, British soldiers could search your home and arrest you. Many people were angry because it basically forced them to pay taxes on everything that was already taxed before. -
The Tea Act
The Tea Act was passed to help out the East India Company because they were in serious financial trouble so they granted a monopoly on tea sales. It said that you could only buy your tea from the East India Company. -
The Boston Port Act
The Boston Port Act was passed because King George noticed that they were starting to lose control over the colonists and that they were going to either lose them, or master them. This act basically shut down the Boston Harbor so no one could leave. This stopped a lot of things and it trapped people there. -
MA Government Act and Administration of Justice Act
The Massachusetts Government Act was passed to stop the colonists from having secret meetings. It said that they could not have any meetings without the governor there. The Administration of Justice act said that if anyone in the province of Massachusetts committed murder or any other capital offense, they had to defend themselves in Great Britain. -
The Quebec Act
This act was passed because the British Parliament needed to make it clear that they owned Quebec. It was also passed so they could tax the colonies. The Quebec Act said that all the territory of Quebec would be expanded into the colonies. The colonists were very mad because of this.
