    This play was based on a hit French play from 1973. It was produced by Harvey Fierstein with lyrics by Jerry Herman. It debuted on stage on August 21, 1983. This play was ground-breaking musical comedy. For the first time in history a man sang a love song to another man on stage. It also introduced what many consider the gay anthem "I Am What I Am" for generations in the LGBTQ community (breakingcharacter.com).

It is a story of two heterosexual women that become friends and later develop a more intimate relationship. When they share their first kiss a gay bashing onlooker attacks one of them causing her to fall into a coma.
