The Book Thief

  • Death

    We meet our narrator, Death. He tells how it sees "colors" before it sees humans. It takes our soul into it's arms.
  • The Death of the Boy on the Train

    Death comes to find a dead boy with his mother and sister. The boy died on the train and was carried off. This boy's sister is "The Book Thief". Their mother was leaving them with a new foster family, the Hubermanns. This is the last time Liesel sees her mother.
  • Her First Book

    Liesel steals her first book when she is at the cemetery. She sees a little black book in the snow. She didn't know how to read when she found it but she was later taught by her foster father and eventually read her first book.
  • School for Liesel

    Liesel is an old girl in a young class. She was never to taught how to read when she was younger so she is old for where she is in school. She gets made fun of for it but her foster father, Hans, starts to teach her in the middle of the night because Liesel has nightmares of her brother ever night.
  • Rudy

    One of the first people Liesel meets is her neighbor Rudy. He's a young boy barely older than Liesel and he starts to develop a crush on Liesel and is always asking for kisses. They are best friends and partners in crime.
  • Two More

    This year for Christmas Liesel is given two books by Papa, Hans Hubermann. Soon after this, her class begins to write letters. Liesel wants to write to her real mother who left her with the Hubermanns. Liesel doesn't realize that she will most likely never get a response.
  • 463 Days Later

    463 Days after stealing her first one, Liesel finally steals a second book, "The Shoulder Shrug". This time it is from a book burning on Hitler's birthday out of anger. She is seen stealing the book by a woman. The woman later invites the girl to her house and into her library.
  • Stealing Apples

    Liesel and Rudy join a gang of people that steals fruit so they don't go hungry. The two steal multiple apples and eat them all. Later they throw up and Mama isn't happy.
  • Max

    Max is a Jew being hidden in a shack 100 miles from Molching, where Liesel is. He spends almost a year making to the Hubbermans just to live in their basement. He will later be hidden with the Hubermanns at the end of 1940.
  • The Standover Man

    This is Liesel's third Birthday with the Hubbermans. This is her first birthday with Max being there. For her birthday, Max writes a book about his life for Liesel, "The Standover Man".
  • Almost Number 6

    Ilsa, the woman who saw Liesel take the book from the fire and the mayor's wife, convincing Liesel to take the book "The Whistler" home with her after many trips to the library. With the book, Liesel is also given a letter that is canceling Mama's laundry service. After leaving, Liesel decides to return and give the book back to Ilsa out of anger towards her canceling the service.
  • Finally Number 6

    After returning the book back to Ilsa, Liesel decides she wants "The Whistler", but not as a gift. The Book Thief strikes again and steals the book from the mayor's wife's library with Rudy. A boy named Viktor, a member of the stealing gang, takes the book from the two and throws in into the river. Luckily, Rudy jumped in and was able to retrieve it.
  • sNOw Fun

    Because Max cannot leave the basement of the house, Liesel decides to bring snow into the house so the two can play in it together. As a result, Max becomes ill and unconscious.
  • Presents

    When Max became unconscious from his illness he did not wake up. During his long slumber Liesel proceeds to leave him a total of 13 presents over the months that pass. Nearly three months later Max wakes up.
  • "Stealing"

    Liesel steals a second book from the library on her own, "A song in the Dark". She later goes back for a third book to steal but, in this one, "The Complete Dulden Dictionary and Thesaurus , she finds a note written to her by Ilsa.
  • Bye Max

    During a parade, Papa gives an extremely weak Jew bread. Hans is beaten for this. Because of this they decide Max should leave in case people come to search his house because of his generosity to the Jew. Max leaves and people did come later. They didn't want Hans though, they wanted Rudy. Rudy's parents refused to let them take him.
  • Off to Kill the Fuhrer

    Liesel's and Rudy's Papas are sent off to war. Because of this the two children decide to set out on an adventure to kill Hitler. There adventure ends when it starts to get dark.
  • The Word Shaker

    Max left his journal with Liesel's Mama and was told to give it to Liesel when she was ready. Christmas day was when she was ready. Another book to her collection.
  • Coming Home!

    Papa's Troop's Truck got in an accident and luckily he only suffered a broken leg but this means he is coming home!
  • Her Own Story

    After ruining a book in the library, Liesel writes a letter to Ilsa apologizing and saying that she won't be going to the library any more. Ilsa returns the letter with a black book, saying that Liesel should write her own story now. She writes "The Book Thief".
