  • Liesel's Brother Dies

    The book begins with death talking to the reader about Liesel's brother's death on the train going to Molching. Liesel was very close with her brother and this event was very hard for her.

  • Book #1 is Stolen

    Since Liesel is so close to her brother, at his funeral a grave digger drops the book "The Grave Diggers Handbook" so she steals it to stay close to him. This is the first book Liesel learns to read with the help of her foster father Hans Hubermann.

  • Liesel Meets Hans and Rosa Hubermann

    Liesel went to Himmel Street in Molching, Germany to meet her foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann.

  • Book #2 is Stolen

    On Hitler's birthday, 1940 The Book Thief steals her second book "The Shoulder Shrug" during a book burning in the middle of Molching.

  • Max Arrives on Himmel Street

    Jewish man Max Vandenburg arrives at the Hubermanns to escape the Nazis from taking him to a Concentration Camp.

  • Rudy Saves the Book

    The book Liesel just stole from Ilsa ends up in the river and Rudy goes into the river to save it. After doing this he asks Liesel for a kiss and she declines it yet again.

  • Book #3 is Stolen

    Liesel steals her third book but this time from Ilsa Hermann, the mayors wife.

  • Max Gets Very Sick

    After the snow in the house Max gets very sick from December to February. In February he gets worse and very weak. Rosa and Hans don't know if he will make it through the month.

  • The Indoor Snowday

    Since Max can't go outside Liesel gathers snow to take to the basement and surprise him. The entire family ends up having fun in the snow.

  • Max Gets Well

    After months of being sick he is finally better by the spring time. Liesel spent her winter going to the basement to visit Max.

  • Max is Sent Away

    Hans is caught giving bread to a Jewish man so to be sure Max is safe they help him flee from Germany.

  • Hans is Sent to War

    As a punishment for giving the bread to the Jewish man, he is sent away for fight for Germany in WW2.

  • Hans Returns Home

    Hans injures his arm in battle so he is sent back to Molching.

  • Air Raids Hit Molching

    The town of Molching is hit by air raids killing the entire Hubermann and Steiner family and more.

  • Liesel Writes a Book

    Liesel begins to write a book about her life.
