    On April 24th, 1915, Canadian forces at St. Julien located in the Ypres Salient received their first introduction to a new German weapon, poisonous gas. Lt. Col. John McCrae prompted himself to write the famous words that became the poem “In Flanders Fields” because of the loss of his good friend Alexis Helmer. (SOCIAL/ECONOMIC) (-2)

    On February 14th, 1916, Lt. Col. Allison Borden wrote a letter that was distributed to teachers in the province of Nova Scotia. Every child with given a copy in order for them to recruit enough soldiers for three more battalions from Nova Scotia. (SOCIAL) (+2)

    “The explosion on the Halifax Harbour”
    Just before Christmas, on December 6th, 1917, a French boat carrying munitions bound for Europe collided with another ship and exploded in Halifax Harbour. The blast was the largest man-made explosion the would had ever seen, until the atom bomb detonated on Hiroshima, Japan. This blast had killed over 1,600 people and injured thousands more.     The Hague Convention set out rules of war that stated that hospitals must be spared from attacks, and ships that were marked with red crosses that lit up at night. A German U-boat torpedoed the Llandovery Castle at 9:30pm on June 27th, 1918. Of the 258 people on board, only 24 survived. (POLITICAL) (-2)
