In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. His landing in the Caribbean was a significant event in relation to imperialism. He sailed for the throne, in attempt to grow their empire's sphere of influence. -

Dividing the Globe in Half
Spain and Portugal needed to build their own empires quickly. This relates to competition between Spain and Portugal. The pope set a Line of Demarcation, dividing the non-European world into two zones. Spain had trading and exploration rights in any lands west of the line. Portugal had the same rights to the east of the line. They agreed to sign the Treaty of Tordesillas. -

Tenochtitlan Falls to the Spanish
Cortez compelled Moctezuma to sign over his land and treasure to the Spanish. He completes conquest of the Aztecs by capturing and demolishing Tenochtitlan and building Mexico City on the ruins of it. This relates to imperialism because the Spanish took over the land that already had inhabitants. -
The Atlantic Slave Trade
The Atlantic Slave Trade is an example of trade. The Spanish were the first major European partners in the slave trade. They bought slaves to labor in Spain's South American Empire. The first cargo of African slaves arrives in Virginia. -
Industries and Cities Thrive
Triangular trade was profitable for many people.It was also an example of economic systems and trade. A shipbuilding industry in in New England grew to support the shipping industry. Other colonial industries, such as fishing, raising tobacco, and processing sugar, became hugely successful. -
Struggling for Power
Britain and France emerged as powerful rivals. This relates to European conflict. In North America war erupted called the French and Indian War. It also turned into a worldwide struggle known as the Seven Years' War. They were fighting over dominance in North America.
