Battle of Britain Begins
On this day, the Germans began to bomb Britain. For the next couple months, the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force fought completely in the air. Germany ended up losing. This battle was significant because the Nazis were never able to invade the U.K. because of how big of a threat the RAF would be to the Nazi ground troops. If the Nazis had won, they would have definitely invaded the United Kingdom.

Battle of Moscow Begins
On this day, the Battle of Moscow between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany began. Germany had planned to invade the Soviet Union and take over Moscow in four months but the Soviets able to drive the Nazis back from Moscow and successfully defended the city. It was significant because the Nazis lost 500,000 men and HItler and his generals grew distrustful of each other.

Battle of Midway Begins
On this day, the Battle of Midway between the U.S. and Japan began on the Midway Atoll. Japan had wanted to destroy the remaining aircraft carriers that remained after the Pearl Harbor attack but the United States got revenge and won the battle. This battle was important because Japan lost a good portion of their navy and lost technicians, mechanics, and ground crew members.

Battle of Stalingrad Begins
On this day, the Battle of Stalingrad between the Nazis and the Soviet Union began. The Nazis were trying to take over the city of Stalingrad, which the Soviets were defending. This battle ultimately ended with another German loss and was significant because Stalingrad was a transportation route and could have been utilized the Germany's advantage had they won.

Battle of Guadalcanal Begins
On this day, the Battle of Guadalcanal between the U.S.and Japan began. It started with the takeover of Henderson Field. Throughout the next six months, Japan deployed troops to try and take the base back but failed. On February 9, 1943, Japan finally withdrew their troops and left the Solomon Islands. This battle was significant because it was the first time America had freed territory from Japan.

Battle of Kursk Begins
On this day, the Battle of Kursk began. This battle was between the Soviet Union and Germany and occurred near the city of Kursk. German Field Marshal Manstein had wanted to attack the Soviets that were near Kursk as soon as the spring thaw ended but Hitler wanted to wait until tanks came to help. The Nazis lost because of this long wait and was significant because they could have gained momentum in WWII.
