First Battle at Bull Run
The Union Army named battles for the nearest body of water—in this case, a small river called Bull Run. this was the first major battle of the civil war. each side expects to win this battle and be done with this "war" within a few hours. Volunteer soldiers lined-up in colorful, clean uniforms waiting for the event to begin. After ten hours of fighting, nearly 5,000 soldiers lay dying, dead, captured, or missing as the Union troops retreated to Washington. -
Battle of Shiloh
Then-commander Grant’s plan to “win the West” by attacking South’s railway lines. Confederate forces attack the Union while they wait for reinforcements. Caused more than 23,500 men
to be killed or missing – ¼ of the men fighting. From this important battle,General Grant knew that the South would not be pushovers. -
2nd Battle of Bull Run
Fought near the town of Manassas, VA on August 29-30, 1862 .
Union leader: Major John Pope, Confederate leader: Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Pope thought that because of his superior numbers, he could out maneuver the Confederates; he failed.
Jackson, Longstreet , and Lee all successfully defended Manassas. the result was the Confederate victory, Lee had not successfully destroyed Pope's army as he had wanted. -
Battle of Antietam "Bloodiest Single Day of the War"
1st battle on Union soil (Maryland) it was a 12-hour bloodbath.
General Lee led the Confederate troops into the North, but could not push through Union line. 100,000+ soldiers fight- 23,000 dead in one day, the battle was not a decisive victory for either side. Swayed foreign opinion in favor of the Union. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Fought in Mississippi. This Union victory split the Confederacy in two, and the North controlled the Mississippi River. Grant had twice as many soldiers, and it ended with the Siege of Vicksburg on July 4th: Confederate soldiers were starving and low on ammunition. -
