What: the Battle of the Atlantic was the sea battles and skirmishes of the atlantic ocean when German U-Boats started to sink many shipping vessles.
Why: the Germans attacked shipping vessles because they did not want the vessles to make it to Europe and deliver supplies to the British on the front.
