Stamp Act of 1765
On March 22, 1765, British Parliament finally passed the Stamp Act or Duties in American Colonies Act. It required colonists to pay taxes on every page of printed paper they used. The tax also included fees for playing cards, dice, and newspapers. -

Olive Branch Petition sent to England
The last attempt to prevent formal war from being declared. The Petition emphasized their loyalty to the British crown and emphasized their rights as British citizens. -
Declaration of Independence adopted
On July 2, 1776, Congress voted to declare independence. On July 7, 1776 they signed the declaration of independence freeing themselves from great Britain. -

It was the worst American defeat in the field and left the British in temporary control of the southern colonies. -

Bill of Rights adopted
George Washington sent copies of the 12 amendments adopted by Congress to the states. By December 15, 1791, three-fourths of the states had ratified 10 of these, now known as the “Bill of Rights.”
