The American Revolution

    French & Indian War

    From 1754 to 1763, the British and the French, with the help of natives, fought over the Ohio River Valley. They had both wanted that land and the war resulted in Britain winning a large amount of land from the French.
  • Sons of Liberty

    Sons of Liberty
    The Sons of Liberty was a group formed in 1765 because they didn't like the taxation put on the colonist and would do acts that opposed Britain's governing over the colonist. This group would later on be involved in the Boston Tea Party.
  • The Townshend Act of 1767

    The Townshend Act of 1767
    These were acts passed in 1767 that put taxes on many imported goods the colonist used so Britain could pay for the expenses relating to these colonies. This lead the colonist to boycott these imported goods.

    A group of British soldiers open fire on a crowd of protesting patriots in 1770, killing 5. This lead the army to pull out of Boston. The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Tea Party
    In 1773, 342 chest of tea were dumped into the water by colonist in protest to the taxation enforced by the British. This would lead to the British punishing the colonist with new laws.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    In 1774, British Parliament passes 4 laws in retaliation to the Boston Tea Party. These laws further angered the colonist.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    In 1775, the first military battle of the Revolutionary War happened. The British were trying to stop a rebellion from happening by taking the colonist weapons away but ended up with the British retreating after a battle broke out showing that the colonist could fight back.
  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense Published

    Thomas Paine's Common Sense Published
    This was a pamphlet published in 1776 created by Thomas Paine where it brought up the subject of becoming independent from Britain and how the creation of a democratic republic would be far better than Britain's monarchy. The pamphlet would inspire many colonist into wanting to declare independence from Britain. Common Sense

    Articles of Confederation Created
    In 1777, the first version of the Constitution was created and call the Articles of Confederation that gave most of the power to each individual state. This was a temporary solution during a time of war.

    Battle of Yorktown

    Starting in September of 1781, a month long battle took place in the town of Yorktown. The result of this battle lead to Britain wanting to end the conflict because of their surrender in this battle.
  • Constitution is ratified

    Constitution is ratified
    This was a treaty signed in 1783, in Paris, by U.S. and British representatives that ended the American Revolution. This gave the U.S. its independence and also a large amount of land.
  • 3/5 Compromise

    3/5 Compromise
    The north and the south come to an agreement in 1787 that enslaved Americans would count as 3/5ths of a person when being represented. This allow the south to make sure that slaves could not have as much a say in anything.
  • Great Compromise

    Great Compromise
    In 1787, an agreement was made to where each state would have two senators while the amount of representatives would be based on how many people are in that state. This made it more fair and would make sure that no state could have more power than the other.
  • Bill of Rights adopted

    In 1791, 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights was adopted by three-fourths of the states. These rights were made to protect U.S. citizens and was the start of our amendments. The Bill of Rights
