    The military were sent to the colonies in order to tighten their control on the colonies. The military were allowed to do anything, greatly angering the colonists.

    A small British army opened fire on a colonist mob, causing 5 people to be killed. This event became known to history as the Boston Massacre.

    As a protest, a band of disguised colonists, angered by the tea tax, boarded a British ship and dumped some hundreds of crates of tea into the sea.

    In Philadelphia, the First Continental Congress took place, 56 delegates, two from each of the colonies except Georgia, discussed what should be done about the pesky British and their overpriced taxes.

    The Enlightenment was happening during this era, and Thomas Paine wasn’t taking any chances when he decided to publish his famed pamphlet Common Sense, which was in favor of the Americans, much to the fury of the British.

    The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson over the span of 17 days, was brought to Congress for revision and on July 2 the committee wanted independence, and on July 4 the Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence.
