  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act reduced taxes on molasses from 6 pence to 3 pence per gallon. This also caused more foreign goods to be taxed like sugar, certain wines, coffee, and pimiento. Colonists complained about these changes, which violated their rights as British subjects, but most of them just went along with it.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    British parliament passed the Stamp Act. This placed tax on newspaper, pamphlets, legal documents, and most other printed material. It was required that an official government stamp would be placed on each paper to show that a tax had been paid. Colonists were very unhappy with this and they boycotted British goods until this act was repealed.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    A small unruly crowd threatened a squad of British soldiers. The soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists. African American Corpus Attucks was the first to fall. This shooting added to an already tense situation.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    A few colonists dressed up like Indians. They went and boarded three British Tea Ships in Boston. As a large crowd was standing there watching the men, they began breaking open every crate on board the ship. Then, the men dumped all of the tea into the Boston Harbor.

    The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of the most important colonial victories in the United States for Independence. This was one of the Battles that made both sides realize this was not going to be a quick and decesive war. They thought they had to protect their land and freedom.
  • Battle of Long Island

    Battle of Long Island
    Both sides knew that New York was the most important part for the of communications between the Northern and Southern Colonies. Washington brought his US troops waiting for the British to arrive. The British surprised them and took the battle.
  • Battle of Fort Washington

    Battle of Fort Washington
    The last position the colonists held on Manhattan Island was the area around Fort Washington. The British led by General Lord Howe sent 8,000 troops after about 2,900 American troops led by General Washington. The British won and took over Fort Washington.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    General Washington along with his 2,400 American troops who only had 18 guns went after Colonel Rahl and about 1,400 Hessians with just 6 light guns. Colonel Rahl surrendered to General Washington. The Americans took this battle.
  • Battle of Princeton

    Battle of Princeton
    General Washington and his troops fought against General Lord Cornwallis in Princeton, New Jersey. Washington led his army of 7,000 up against 8,000 British and Hessian troops.Only about 1,200 men on both sides actually engaged in battle. The American troops escaped Lord Cornwallis's move.
  • Battle of Ticonderoga

    Battle of Ticonderoga
    Major General John Burgoyne commanded the British after Major General Arthur St. Clair and his Americans. There was 7,213 regular Britsh, Hessians, and Brunswick troops. Along with that they had a large group of Native Americans and 150 Canadians. The Americans only had about 3,000 on their side. They had no chance and they withdrew leaving Fort Ticonderoga to the British.
  • Battle of Brandywine

    Battle of Brandywine
    A bit west of Philadelphia the British and Hessian troops under General Sir William Howe took battle against the American Continental Army and General Washington. The Americans outnumbered the British by about 2,000 men. The British were left to occupy the field which caused the Americans to comeout of their position on Brandywine Creek.
  • Battle of Camden

    Battle of Camden
    In South Carolina, Lord Cornwallis led the British against General Gates and the Americans. The British were comprised of 1,500 regular and 500 militia going up against 1,500 continental and 1,500 militia which made up the American side. The British ended up winning the battle despite being outnumbered.
  • King's Mountain

    King's Mountain
    The American colonists under commanders James Johnston, John Sevier, and William Campbell with a force of 900 colonists squared off with commander Patrick Ferguson and his 1,200 loyalists. This battle was by the Northern boarder line in North Carolina. Americans won the battle and this was considered the turning point of the Revolutionary War.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    George Washington led his colonists consisting of 20,600 men with the help of the French after Lord Cornwallisat Yorktown, Virginia. Lord Cornwallis went to restore and ended up being trapped by the American and the French with no escape. He had no other choice so, Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General Washington.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    2 years passed between when Cornwallis surrendered to the signing of the peace treaty. This formally ended the war between Great Britain, France, Spain, and the United States.The Treaty of Paris contained major provisions taht recognized independence, boarders, who had rights to states, and most importantly it made everyone live in peace.
