The American Revolution

  • John Locke (1632-1704)

    According to History.com, John Locke published a book in 1690 called "Two Treatises of Government" which went through some ideas Thomas Jefferson would later write in the Declaration of independence.
  • Charles Montesquieu (1689-1755)

    During the early formation of the US government, Charles Montesquieu suggested a separation of power into branches of government. He proposed the idea in a book called "The Spirit of the Law."
  • The French and Indian War

    The French and Indian war is important to the American Revolution because at the end of that war Britain was in debt and started imposing taxes on the colonies which the colonies did not like.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763 was meant to be a partial law passed by the British Empire to keep colonists on the east side of the Appalachian mountains and out of the west. Only licensed explorers could go beyond what they called the Proclamation line and interact with Native Americans. Most colonists ignored this act and went passed the Proclamation line. The Proclamation of 1763 was later taken away after the American Revolution.
  • Sam Adams (1722-1803)

    in 1765 Samuel Adams helped organize the Sons of Liberty and became an important leader in that group, Sam Adams also was one of the key activists when Brittain started taxing the colonies.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was one of the last straws for the Colonies, after the massacre there were a couple of years until the Revolutionary War started.
  • Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804)

    Alexander Hamilton left College in 1775 to fight for America in the Revolutionary war where he later became a lieutenant serving under George Washington.
  • The Minutemen

    The Minutemen were important to the Revolutionary war because they were known to get ready in a minute, and they were able to rapidly deploy their forces to help defeat the British.
  • John Hancock (1737-1793)

    John Hancock inherited a shipping company from his uncle and used his influence and wealth to help the movement for America to become independent. Hancock was also President of the second continental congress from 1775-1777 when the U.S. adopted the Declaration of Independence.
  • Benedict Arnold (1741-1801)

    In 1775 Benedict Arnold helped capture Fort Ticonderoga. He later became known as a traitor to the US because he made an agreement with Brittain to turn over a US post at West point for money.
  • "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!" Speach

    The speech known as "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" is a famous speech given by Patrick Henry in 1775. This speech energized the American troops to fight Britain.
  • The Battle of Lexington

    The Battle of Lexing started America's fight for independence.
  • The Battle of Concord

    The Battle of Concord was a battle the Americans won, the battle gave them belief in their ability to fight and win battles.
  • The Battle of Bunker Hill

    The Battle of Bunker Hill was an important battle for the colonies because though they lost that battle they inflicted many casualties on the British, and the battle even gave them a confidence boost according to History.com.
  • Hessians

    Hessians are German soldiers that fought on the British side of the American Revolution, they added manpower and skill for the British. The Hessians also really angered the Colonists and increased their support for the revolutionary cause.
  • Articles of Confederation

    The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution of The United States, It kept the independence of the states and only allowed congress to be the last resort for the states. But the Articles didn't give the federal government the ability to tax the citizens and would later be replaced by our current constitution.
  • The Battle of Saratoga

    The Battle of Saratoga was a battle that America won against the British, this battle helped secure allies and lift the morale of the American troops as well as give hope for independence.
  • The French Alliance

    The French Alliance was important in helping the Americans defeat the British because not only were they supplying weapons and ammunition, but they were also supplying much-needed manpower. That added manpower eventually helped the US defeat the British.
  • The Battle of Yorktown

    The battle of Yorktown was an important battle because it was the last major battle of the American Revolution. After the battle America became its own nation.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris formally ended the Revolutionary war and helped the U.S. be recognized as an independent country, It also helped the U.S. establish borders.
