  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian war. The British got the victory. All French territory on the mainland of North America was lost.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    King George III issued a proclamation that forbade colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. The purpous of the proclamation was to regulate of trade, settlement, and land purchases on the western frontier. It eventually ensured that British culture and laws were applied in Upper Canada.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The British placed a tax on sugar, wine, and other important things. The British did this because they wanted more money. The British wanted this money to help provide more security for the colonies.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The British lacked housing. Then the Quartering Act was pased. It forced colonists to pay for housing and food for British soldiers. The colonists viewed the Quartering Act as violating the Bill of Rights.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Imposed a tax on all paper documents in the colonies. The money collected by the Stamp Act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists were angery because they thought only there own representative assemblies could tax them.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Townshend Duties are repealed and the Boston Massacre takes place. British soldiers fired at unarmed colonists and killed eight of them. Nobody knows for sure what events led the soldiers to fire on the civilians, but colonists were outraged at what the British Regulars did.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The East India Company had a lot of tea left over. So they sold it to the colonies for a low price. Colonists were mad because the low prices hurt there economy.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Colonists were mad over the tax on the tea so they dressed up as Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Harbor. Resulting in a big financial loss for the East India Company. This was a noviolent protest.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    In response to the Boston Tea Party, the Crown passed a series of laws, Boson Harbor would be closed, Court cases dealing with British soldiers would take place in Britain, Massachusetts would be placed under Military Rule. The Intolerable Acts were laws that were really punishments that King George III put on the colonies.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Delegates from twelve colonies met at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia. Representatives attended from all the colonies except Georgia. The Congress voted to cut off colonial trade with Great Britain unless Parliament abolished the Intolerable Acts.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    British troops were sent to Concord to capture John Hancock and Samuel Adams. Paul Revere rode through Concord warning everybody about the British attack. Captain John Parker told the minutemen "Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war let it begin heres". No one knows who fired the first shot.

    The colonists met and sent a Olive Branch Petition to the king asking for peace. King George refused it and declrared the Colonies in a state of rebellion. The Congress created a Continental Army and asked Thomas Jefferson to draft a document declaring their independence.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    Israel Putnam led a few hundred militiamen up Breed’s Hill. In four hours they had a crude fort. William Howe then ordered his newly arrived troops to launch an immediate attack. The Americans lost to the British because of the lack of gun powder.
  • Common Sense

    Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense. He called for independence from Great Britain. He wrote it in a plaine langauge so that everyone could understand it.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    John Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the document. Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain. The document was finally adopted on July 4th.
  • Battle of Brooklyn

    Battle of Brooklyn
    This was the first major battle to take place after the United States declared independence in July, 1776.Howe's large army landed on Long Island, hoping to capture New York City and gain control of the Hudson River.This was a major victory for the British and defeat for the Americans under General George Washington.

    Thomas Paine wittnessed the hard conditions and the soldiers low spirits on the retreat. For insperarion he published the first in a series of pamphlets The Americen Crisis. It was a on going support for an independance.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    Washington and his army crossed the icy Delaware River. Once they got to the shore of New Jersey the army marched on to Trenton. It snowed hard and all their guns got soaked. Washington ordered that they use the bayonets. Once they arived the Hessians were taken by complete suprise. They surrendered and Washington did not lose a singel man. He then took 868 prisoners and 300 British troops.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    This was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Burgoyne’s army finally reached Saratoga Springs on the Hudson River, it was packed with Militia that easily outnumbered the small British army. Burgoyne ordered an attack, and after taking quite a beating, he surrendered. This Battle has two main results. Convinces European nation that Americans might win the war. Benidict Arnold angee about lack of reginition, betrays his army.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    Washington took his army to Valley Forge to make camp for the winter. The cold weather was brutal, and there was a huge shortage in food and clothing. They grew stronger as Washington put a volunteer, Friedrich Von Steuben, in charge of training the men.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    Was the last major land battle in North America of the American Revolutionary War. 5500 French soldiers docked in Rhode Island to help their American allies against the British in New York City. Washington and Rochambeau surrounded Cornwallis and opened fire.

    The Treaty of Paris officially ends the war in 1783. The United States becomes independant. Gains the territory east of Mississippi, south of Canada, and north of Flordia. Recieves the right to fish off Canda's Atlantic coast. Both US and Britian decided to repayed debts it owed to each other. Brittian agreed to return all enslaved persons it captured. Congress recomend that states return property seized from loyalists.
