Battle of Lexington and Concord
The Battle of Lexington and Concord was what started the American Revolutionary War. It was made up of two battles that began on April 18th, 1775 when British troops marched to Concord to capture John Hancock and Samuel Adams who were already warned about the attack. By the time the British soldiers reached Lexington, Samuel Adams and John Hancock had escaped because they were alerted by Paul Revere. The colonists had expected a fight so they prepared militias and were ready. -
Siege of Boston
From April 19, 1775 - March 17, 1776 was the Siege of Boston which was the eleven-month period, after the Battle of Lexington & Concord, when 20,000 American militiamen effectively contained and surrounded British troops within Boston. The Siege ended when the commander of the Continental Army, George Washington, seized and fortified just outside Boston. -
Siege of Fort Ticonderoga
Once the Siege of Boston began, American leaders became worried that the fort of Ticonderoga allowed the British in Canada a route fro attacking. Men and money were then mounted an expedition to capture Fort Ticonderoga and its large store of artillery. This was granted and approved. Finally, the Massachusetts Committee of Safety received a commission as a colonel and was ordered to have 400 men attack the fort. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker hill took place on June 7, 177 during the Siege of Boston during the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. This battle is named after the Bunker Hill which was involved in the battle and was the main objective of both the British and colonial troops. From this hill, the rebels could bombard the town and British ships in Boston Harbor. -
Battle of Quebec
The Battle of Quebec was the failed American attempt to capture the city during the American Revolutionary War. Patriot forces under Colonel Benedict Arnold (1741-1801) and General Richard Montgomery (1738-75) tried to capture the city of Quebec and win its support for an American cause in Canada but they did not succeed. This was the first major defeat of the Revolutionary War for the Americans. -
Battle of Long Island (Brooklyn Heights)
On the morning of August 27, 1776, British soldiers fired on Americans near a crossroad in Brooklyn. Washington hurried to get across the East River from Manhattan but only got close enough to see the fight from Cobble Hill. When Sullivan's Men were fighting and then realized that the main British force came down and would soon surround him, he ordered his men to go back to Brooklyn Heights before he was captured. -
Battle of Trenton
The morning of December 26, 1776, the Continental Army started its charge on Trenton. As three columns marched through snow, artillery began to fire. Right when the firing began, Hessian regiments ran from their quarters and were ready to fight. The continental army entered the city as they grouped. As they were entering, a Hessian lieutenant, incorrectly reported to a colonel that the Continental Army was surrounding Trenton and their was no available route for retreat. -
Battle of Princeton
The Battle of Princeton was a battle in which General George Washington's revolutionary forces defeated British forces near Princeton, New Jersey. On the night of January 2, 1777 George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, repelled a British attack in Trenton. He evacuated his position, and went to attack the British at Princeton. Mercer, of the Continental Army, and his troops were overrun and Washington sent militia to help him. The militia also began to flee. -
Battle of Brandywine
The Battle of Brandywine was between the American army of Major General George Washington and the British army of General Sir William Howe. The Americans lost to the British and they were forced to withdraw towards the American capital of Philadelphia. -
Battle of Saratoga
During the Battle of Saratoga which was from September 19 - October 7, 1777, England's goal was to cut off and isolate New England from the rest of the colonists. On October 17, 1777, Burgoyne's troops surrendered to Gates at Battle of Saratoga. Overall, it was the biggest victory yet for American Forces and turning point for the war -
French Join the War
The French Joined the war in 1778 and participated by assisting America fight for Independence from 1775-1783. France recognized the whole war as an incarnation of the Enlightenment spirit. -
Capture of Savannah
The Capture of Savannah was an American Revolutionary War battle fought on December 29, 1778 between local American Patriot militia and Continental Army units holding the city and a British invasion force under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell. It was the beginning move in the British strategy to regain control of the rebellious southern provinces. -
Siege of Charleston
The Battle of Charleston (March 29 – May 12, 1780) was a major battle that occurred after the British started to shift their focus towards the American Southern Colonies near the end of the American Revolutionary War. After many weeks of siege, Continental Army Major General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered forces. -
Battle of Camden
The battle started in the morning with Cornwallis' right to attack the American militia. As the British continued, Gates had the Continentals on his right. Suddenly, a volley was fired into the militia.The British lost many people before moving forward with a bayonet charge. There were many shots fired and as his left wing disappeared, Gates decided to escape with the militia. -
Battle of King's Mountain
The Battle of Kings Mountain was a decisive battle between the Patriot and Loyalist militias in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War. This battle took place nine miles south of the present-day town of Kings Mountain, North Carolina in rural York County, South Carolina. This was where the Patriot militia defeated the Loyalist militia. -
Battle of Cowpens
The Battle of Cowpens was a strong victory by the Continental Army forces, in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War over the British Army. This took place in northwestern Cherokee Country, South Carolina, which is north of the city of Cowpens. This battle was a major turning point in the reconquest of South Carolina from the British. -
Battle of Guilford Courthouse
On March 15, 1781, The Battle of Guilford Court House was fought. This battle occurred in Greensboro, the country seat of Guilford County, North Carolina. A huge British voce defeated a large number of Americans but the British army however, sustained multiple dead and injured which resulted in a victory for the Americans which was planned ahead of time. -
Battle of Eutaw Springs
The Battle of Eutaw Springs was a battle of the American Revolutionary War, and was the last major engagement of the war in the Carolinas.On this day, Greene, a major general, laid siege to the fortified village of Ninety Six. Greene later on retreated toward Charlotte, North Carolina. -
Battle of Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown (1781), was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War. On this day, George Washington began this siege with the French and Continental troops against the British General and the many British troops.
