The Battle of Monmouth
28 Jun 1778 General Howe was replaced by Sir Henry Clinton, who believed that capturing Philadelphia had gained the British nothing. Clinton ordered a retreat to New York City, where the Royal Navy could send supplies by sea. On June 28, the Americans caught up with the retreating British near Monmouth, New Jersey. In the following battle, Washington rallied his men to stand and fight. That night, the British escaped across the Hudson to New York City. No one realized that the war in the North
