First Invented
In 1971, Ford car company built an experimental airbag fleet. General Motors tested airbags on the 1973 model Chevrolet that were only sold for government use. -
When they were optional
During 1973 passenger and driver side airbags were optional to the general public. -
First Manuf. to install
By 1988 Chrysler became the first company to offer air bag restraint systems as standard equipment. -
Required
Airbags became mandatory in 1998 -
Advances in technology
Since then there have been two types of airbags made. Frontal and various types of side impact airbags.
Andvanced frontal airbag systems automatically determined if and with what level of power the driver frontal air bag and the passenger front airbag will inflate. It is now based upon:
1. occupant size
2. seat position
3.seat belt use of the occupant
4. crash severity -
Future airbags
In the future I see manufacturers building airbads outside of the car so that when cars collide they bounce off each other like bumper cars.
