Being Home
Lakshmi and her family were very used to living off of having nothing. Her stepfather would spend all of their money on alcohol and clothes but not on her or her mother. This is also the time where Lakshmi becomes a woman and learns the ways of how a woman acts towards men. -
Getting Sold
Soon Lakshmi family had realized they are going broke. Her stepfather sells her to be a "maid" but really she is begin sold into sex trafficking. She is sent off with many different people and on her journey, she has to cross the border into India -
Auntie Bimla
This is the first person that Lakshmi gets sold to. Lakshmi still thinks that she is going to be a maid and is enjoying the time traveling to the city and noticing all the different things. They have a long travel on foot and on bus. -
Uncle Husband
This is the next person Lakshmi gets sold to. She trusts him and finds comfort in knowing that he will protect her. He gives her sweets and they travel on the train. -
Happiness House
Lakshmi has learned that the way of the city is much different. She has arrived at Happiness house and she soon finds out the true purpose of this house. -
Locked in room
She is the new girl so she is forced to stay in a locked room until she learns the ways of the Happiness house. She refuses to sleep with men and is locked in there for quite a while. -
Drugged
She keeps refusing to sleep with men, so Mumtaz drugged her so that she will be able to please men. -
Move rooms
Mumtaz makes clear that Lakshmi is no longer a virgin and will be moved with the other women in another room. In this room, there are posters of movie stars everywhere and a TV. The girls help her figure out the rules of the house. -
Beckham Boy
There was a son of one of the ladies at the house. This boy would go to school and have a normal life. Lakshmi wished to have a normal life. One day she saw that the little boy put a reading book in a little chest he had and could learn. Lakshmi and the Beckham boy became friends and he made her feel happy again. -
American Man
Lakshmi was told when entering the house that the American men will leave her naked on the street. There is a man that comes into the house and tells Lakshmi that he will bring her to a better place with clean clothes but she is afraid and doesn't listen. -
Police
All the girls in the house are sitting watching TV when they hear a loud knock at the door. They all run and hide. The Police come in and are searching around for people, they are breaking and throwing things all over the place. -
Calculations
Lakshmi is trying to see when she will be able to get out of the Happiness House. She has written out on a piece of paper all her expenses and takes it to Mumtaz. Mumtaz looks at it and adds more for the bills that she has had to pay and tells Lakshmi that she will be there for at least another 5 years. -
Street Boy
There is a boy that delivers treats to the girls in the house. He is very sweet to Lakshmi and brings her things for free. He came one day and found out that it was his last. This was the chance for Lakshmi to give the card she got from the American to him so she could go to the clean place. -
Hope
An American man comes and he and Lakshmi go up to a room. She knows what he is here for, so he soon starts talking about the clean place and somewhere to sleep. Lakshmi finally has words come out of her mouth and she tells him she wants to go there. He then says he will go and bring some people with him and get her out of there. -
Safe
The American man returns and all the girls run to hide. Lakshmi knows that it is the American man and she tries to get Anita to come with her but she refuses. Then Lakshmi goes to the American man and they save her.
