Sony PlayStation unveiled (in Japan)
The Sony PlayStation was originally to be a joint venture between Sony and Nintendo, before Nintendo decided to go another way. Sony then decided to release their own console and it was a critical success, selling over 100 million units worldwide. Ken Kutaragi is credited with being the inventor and "Father of the PlayStation". -
DVDs
DVD's quickly became popular, replacing VHS tapes as the preferred format for movies and videos. It offered better video and sound quality, and had higher storage abilities. -
Google officially launched
Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Stanford University PhD students, registered the domain google.com. The company's origins can be traced back to 1995, when Page was considering Stanford for graduate school and Brin was assigned to show him around.
