In the late 1970s, rebels in Afghanistan were fighting the Afghanistan government. The Afghan government asked the Soviet Union for help. To limit the Soviet Union influence, the US gave the rebels arms and money, including a group run by Osama bin Laden. -

Osama believed American troops were desecrating Saudia Arabia, a Muslim country; therefore, he asked them to leave. -
Planning of the attacks
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the original person who planned out the attacks and presented it to Osama bin Laden. Osama accepted the plan and allowed for the plan to go forward in 1999. -

Five hijackers hit the North tower of the World Trade Centre with American Airlines Flight 11. -
9:03 AM Second Crash
Another 5 hijackers crashed into the South tower of the World Trade Centre. -
9:37 AM Third Crash
Five hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. -
10:03 AM Fourth Crash
Four hijackers crashed the United Airlines Flight 93 into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania due to the passengers fighting the terrorists. -
9:59 AM South Tower Collapse
The south tower collapsed after burning for 56 minutes from the plane's fuel after crashing into the tower. -
10:28 AM North Tower Collapse
The North Tower collapsed after burning for 102 minutes. -
5:21 PM 7 World Trade Centre Collapse
Caused by the North Tower debris falling, the 7 WTC caught fire and burned for hours. -
9:40 AM All aircraft within US forced to land
The FAA grounded all aircraft within continental US and told aircrafts already in the air to land immediately. All international civilian aircrafts were redirected to Canada or Mexico. -

Bush addresses the nation with a speech on terrorism, peace, freedom and war. -
Thousands of people look for survivors
A day after the attacks, thousands of construction workers, responders and volunteers look through debris for any survivors. Eighteen people were found alive under the rubble. -
Death of Osama bin Laden
After the long search, American troops finally found and killed the terrorist group al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden. He was killed in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
