If you were a working woman or in the media, most likely, you had jackets and dresses with shoulder pads. One famous person who wore shoulder pads was Princess Diana. Another popular style was men who wore their shirt collars up high. -

The movies for the 80's were varied. One of the most popular genres was Sy-Fi movies. Famous Sy-Fy movies of the 80's include "Back to the Future", "Zapped", "The Terminator", "Blade Runner", "Aliens", "RoboCop", and "Tron". One very famous film called "Ferris Bueller's day off came out in the 80's. And, in May of 1989, famous Japaneese anime, "Dragonball" is first aired in America. This is the start of Japaneese anime shows becoming popular in America. -

One of the biggest genres of music in the 80's was Pop. Two of the biggest Pop artists of this time was Michael Jackson and Madonna. Madonna was considered one of the most successful female Pop artists during the 1980's. Michael Jackson was considered one of the best male Pop artists during the 1980's. He was widely known for his glove, moonwalk dance, and leather jacket. One of his albums known as "Thriller" became, and still is, the best-selling album of all time. -

Nuclear Arms Race Continues
The nuclear arms race between the Soviet Union and America continued through the 80's. The USSR and America kept mass producing nuclear arms. But, in the 80's many protestors protested to end the arms race. The arms race did not end until the INF treaty was signed in 1987 by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. -
Ronald Reagan Elected
Republican canidate Ronald Reagan (who was also an actor) and running mate George H.W. Bush (who was later sworn to office in 1989) are sworn into office. Ronald Reagan has been considered one of the best presidents we've had. During the Cold War he helped a lot in many ways. One way was the INF treaty. The INF treaty was when Reagan was able to have Gobachev get rid of most of his missiles while he got rid of most of his. This was a big step in ending the Cold War. -

The Apple Macintosh was the first actual personal computer invented. It introudouced things such as fonts, didgital painting, and text to speech. The INF Treaty
The INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces) Treaty is signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. This treaty eliminated nuclear ground launched short range and intermediate missiles. This was a giant step in the Cold War. This then led to people wanting elections in the USSR, which then led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. -
George H. W. Bush
George H. W. Bush, former vice president to Ronald Reagan, and his running mate Dan Quayle are sworn to office. George H. W. Bush was president during the time of the Soviet Union collapse and when the Berlin Wall fell. And, in December 1989, George H. W. Bush sent troops into Panama to remove General Manuel Noriega from power. This attack was a success. He is also famous for operation Desert Storm. Operation Desert Storm is when Bush sent troops into Kuwait to push out Iraqi soldiers. -
Berlin Wall Falls
After 28 years, the Berlin wall dividing East Germany an West Germany falls. And after almost 50 years, Germany was reunited and made a democratic government. Many families and friends were reunited and all East Berliners were now free from communism. -
Mikhail Gorbachev Elected
Mikhail Gorbachev is elected as the president of the USSR. Gorbachev was born in March of 1931. He was the one who had consulted with Ronald Reagan to get rid of most of both of their nuclear missiles.(the INF treaty) He was also president of the USSR when it collapsed. He resigned December 25, 1990. Later he recieved a Nobel Prize for peace in 1990 because he had ended the postwar for domination of Eastern Europe. -
Soviet Union Colapses
After almost 70 years of communism, Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev resigned and the Soviet Union colapsed. Russians toppeled and destroyed former comunist leaders' statues. The Soviet Union was then split up into 15 new nations. Boris Yeltsin was then elected to be the new president.
