The 1950's

  • The first organ transplant (Kidney)

    The kidney was the first organ transplant that was done successfully. Later in the 1960's, more transplants were successful, like lungs and intestinal organs.
  • Korean war starts

    The Korean war started on June 25, 1950 when 75,000 army soldiers from North Korea came and attacked the South Korean people. The country is still split to this day.
  • Rock and Roll begins

    A guy named Alan Freed started playing his style of music and called it "rock and roll" and it became popular.
  • Israel proclaims Jerusalem as its capital.

    The US still wants to keep Jerusalem as an international zone but Israel proclaims it as a capital.
  • The polio outbreak

    In 1950's there was a huge outbreak of polio disease that affected more than 60,000 children in the US. Thousands were paralyzed and more than 3,000 died.
  • The Soviet Union launches the first satellite to orbit the earth.

    This was the first satellite to be put into orbit around the earth.
  • DNA was discovered

    James D. Watson and Francis H. C. Crick discovered double helix structure of DNA that is human genes.
  • Queen Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England

    Queen Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England after her father (the king) died.
  • Vietnam war begins

    It's known as The Second Indochina War and was caused by the rising of tensions on both sides. The US had been providing lots of goods to Vietnam.
  • Alaska becomes part of the US

    Alaska and Hawaii were the last states to join the US in 1959
