13th and 14th amendment
The 13th and 14th amendments were big parts to making the 15th amendment happen, It was all part of the Reconstruction plan. they were stepping stones to making a more perfect country. The 13th amendment officially abolished and prohibited slavery even to this day. The 14th amendment declared that all persons born in the U.S. are American citizens including African Americans which was passed in 1868 -
First Reconstruction Act
This act let the Southern states back into the union, laid out the requirements to let them back in. It said that the governments were going to be based on establishing universal men's suffrage or voting. -
Reconstruction bills
Congress passed Reconstruction bills stating that Virginia, Mississippi, Texas and Georgia must ratify the amendment as a condition before these states could regain congressional representation. They all ratified in the year 1970 -
proposal of the 15th Amendment
Republicans were ready to introduce an amendment guaranteeing the black man’s right to vote. Several versions of the amendment were submitted, debated, rejected and then reconsidered in both the House and Senate. -
Proposal approved
The House approved the compromise stating that the governments should no longer deny the right to vote to citizens of a different race, color, previous condition of servitude. The Senate approved the next day -
First states to ratify
Nevada was the first state to ratify on March 3, 1869. In this order were the next states to ratify, West Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Arkansas, South Carolin, and Pennsylvania. All of these states ratified in March of 1869 -
More states ratify
New York, Indiana, Florida, New Hampshire, Virginia, Vermont, Alabama, Missouri, Minnesota, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Kansas, Ohio, Georgia, and Iowa all ratified after March of 1869. These states ratified between April 14, 1869, to February 3, 1870. -
New York revoking ratification
New York tried to revoke their ratification of the 15th amendment after they already ratified on April 14, 1869. They were not able to revoked it though. -
Ratification of the 15th Amendment
The 15th amendment was ratified and put into the constitution on Feb. 3, 1870. It stated that the federal or state government could not deny the right to vote to citizens of a different race, color, or previous conditions of servitude. -
Last states to ratify
The last states to ratify was Nebraska, Feb. 17, 1870, and Texas the next day. -
President approval
President Grant officially declared the 15th amendment part of the constitution. Cities all over America Celebrated.
