The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted in 1868. It grants citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to all people "born or naturalized" in the United States. This amendment sough to grant citizenship to African Americans and enslaved people who were/are emancipated after the Civil War, because they were not considered citizens of the US before the civil war, and did not have equal rights. African Americans were not protected under the law before this Amendment was made.
